Josh Lawless – Healthy Lifestyle – Fitness Goals
Many of our #NHQtown Affiliates, Ambassadors, and Athletes have incredible stories of how fitness and nutrition have completely changed and transformed their bodies, mental health, and lives. Ambassador, Josh Lawless, is no exception. Josh became a #NHQtown Affiliate in September 2020, later being promoted to Ambassador in December 2020. However, Josh’s journey began many years before that. The first time that Josh ever came to Nutrition HQ, he was on a mission to make a change and to better himself mentally and physically. He spoke to Tyler about his goals, and together they came up with a plan that would allow Josh to become the best version of himself. Years later, Josh has done just that. Josh’s journey is a perfect example of how with hard work, extreme persistence, and intense self discipline, crushing your goals is absolutely possible.
Interview with Josh Lawless
Q: When did you begin your fitness/health journey? What pushed you to start?
A: I started my journey around 4 or 5 years ago. I remember seeing a couple photos of myself floating around that really motivated me, and I knew that the person looking back at me in the mirror wanted to change. I knew that I wanted to get stronger, physically and mentally, and that I had the drive to see results. I still remember the first day I walked into NHQ, and met Tyler. He changed my life. He didn’t try to sell me on anything. He listened to me, to my goals, and got me on a great path to success.
Q: How do you stay motivated?
A: Honestly, it’s super easy. It’s become a part of my routine. Every. Day. How do we stay motivated to get up every morning? To go to work? It’s just been programmed into my brain that this is now a part of my routine, and I must accommodate. It helps that going to the gym aids my mental health possibly more than my physical health. With work, being a dad, husband, and a musician with multiple projects, I carry a lot of stress and have dealt with anxiety since I was a kid. Lifting/exercising is my stress reliever. I just love throwing my headphones in and going to work in my own little world for an hour or 2 a day. It’s so vital to my mental health.
Q: What are your holy grail products that helped you along the way?
A: Oh man! There’s been a lot of good ones. My current go-to stack is:
1. TB16 Thermal Burn (Great coffee replacement / fat burner for mornings)
2. Bucked Up Pre Workout (All flavors are amazing)
3. Rule 1 Creatine
Q: What are some of your favorite workouts to do?
A: I’d say pull-ups for sure. Each time I do one I still think about the first time I stepped foot in the Kroc. I couldn’t do a single one, and that was the first goal I set for myself. Now, I like to do sets of 8-10 with a 15 lb dumbbell between my feet. 🙂
Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is wanting to start or further their fitness/health journey?
A: The hardest part is forming a routine and making a plan. Gyms can be intimidating. I get that. Talk to someone you know. Talk to me! Get a workout plan from someone that fits your goals. Maybe you’ve seen one before and thought, “what the heck is a Russian Twist? Or a Military Press?” I’ve been there! Watch YouTube videos of exercises to get a feel for forms and different muscle groups. Again, the hardest part is stepping foot in the door. The first week soreness will fade. You got this!!! Make today “Someday.”
As Josh mentioned, the hardest part to getting started is forming a routine and making a plan. That’s why it’s incredibly important to start making the plans, building the habits, and getting into the routines right now. Feeling like a “beginner” may be scary, but what’s even scarier is staying stagnant in life and continually being unhappy with yourself. Don’t sit around waiting and wishing for change to come. The only way things will ever change is with the hard work, persistence, and self discipline being put in by you. There is no better time than right now to pursue your dreams and to reach those goals that you have in mind. Just as Josh said, Make today “Someday.”
